Abstract |
At present, landfilling is the primary method used in final waste disposal in
Malaysia and most of the landfill sites are open dumping or unsanitary landfill.
Disposal of waste in unsanitary landfill poses various threats to environment
due to lack of environmental protection component. The absence or
inadequate use of liner system can lead to leachate penetration to soil and
water bodies. Hence, the application of SMART Soil Liner System in the
landfill will retard the migration of leachate and its toxic constituents. Study
showed that the addition of bentonite clay in soil will increase the interface
shear strength between geotextile and the soil liner. Determination of the
interface shear strength value between soil liner and geotextile is important to
avoid geotextile folding or failure especially at the slope area. Moreover, it was
tested that the presence of bentonite clay in the liner reduced the permeability
of water to flow through the soil. As such, the introduction of this innovation
will improvise current application of landfill liner system. Bentonite is
abundantly available low-cost natural resource in Malaysia. Thus, it offers a
good potential to be marketed to various stakeholders such as local
authorities and private companies. This innovation will support Malaysia
Aspiration by 2020 to achieve effective solid waste and public cleansing
management and simultaneously increase the quality of life of community by
providing safe and proper waste disposal. |
