Abstract |
Introductory accounting is most frequently a first-year subject and is often
taught to a variety of student cohorts in higher education. Non-accounting
students are likely to view accounting as a challenging subject and not able to
appreciate the course’s relevancy. Therefore, using the Competition Based
Learning (CBL) model, a quiz competition (FAC_QUIZ.COM) was designed to
improve the level of motivation to learn the first accounting course (ACC106)
among non-major accounting students. The FAC_QUIZ.COM learning activity
is conducted in two stages (preliminary and final rounds). The instructions
have been given to the lecturers and students approximately three weeks
prior to the preliminary and final rounds of the quiz competition. Two separate
surveys were given during the two stages of quiz competition. Earlier, during
the preliminary round, more than 50% of the students indicated their
readiness to participate in the FAC_QUIZ.COM quiz competition. In the final
round, majority of the students agreed that the FAC_QUIZ.COM help to
improve the motivation to learn the first accounting course. Next, the
relationship between the results from the final round survey and the final
examination grade for ACC106 will be determined to assess the impact of the
FAC_QUIZ.COM implementation. The FAC_QUIZ.COM quiz competition is a
unique learning activity for non-accounting programs in Universiti Teknologi
MARA (UiTM) which is used exclusively in the accounting program. Finally,
the video on the final round of the FAC_QUIZ.COM will be uploaded on iLearn
and shared among students and lecturers in the entire system of UiTM, which,
in turn, encourage the implementation of the similar learning activity in the
near future. |
