Abstract |
With the advancement of the social network sites in the Internet, there are an
increasing number of practitioners who utilize such Internet technology for
teaching and learning in higher education institutions. A growing body of
knowledge has explored the benefits of social network sites on improving
student learning experience. However, most of the previous studies have
focus on subjects related to social science in western countries. Drawing from
the findings of the previous studies, this project attempts to understand the
factors that influence learning engagement in a Facebook page among
undergraduates’ students of Hospitality Management, University Technology
MARA Pulau Pinang. The findings from thematic analysis of three focus group
interviews showed an encouraging sign post of the use of social network sites
for online learning and teaching. The findings suggested that Facebook page
could be used as an online platform to supplement or support the current
traditional classroom by reinforcing the levels of attentiveness and passion on
the particular subject among students. Still, in order for Facebook page to
achieve its full potential as an online teaching and learning instrument,
students need to be motivated to engage with this new kind of teaching and
learning experience. |
