Abstract |
English for Pre-Diploma 1 is an OpenLearning platform available online which
designed for science stream students (beginner to pre-intermediate). It
focuses on the active student experience while creating a social community
around English for future scientists. This is an online course developed for
massive open online learning (MOOC) specifically for ELC010 (English for
Pre-Diploma 1) and designed for UiTM as an OpenLearning platform. The
novelty of this product is the course content which designs by following the
intrinsically motivating instruction defines by Malone that provides learners
with three main features: challenge, curiosity, and fantasy. MOOC is about
providing platform on how people learn best and active learning empowers
the students and makes the teacher the facilitator of the learning environment.
The course content is designed by using student-centred, active and social
learning pedagogical principles including active activities for assessments,
curating content for community engagement, and updated course content
focuses on scientific related materials. There are 6 main engaged modules
with rich media content and constructing activities using OpenLearning
Widgets. This course is made up of 6 core modules which run through
foundation concepts in English language skills and how they connect to the
real world; Module 1: Introduction to Language Skills, Module 2: Speak like a
Scientist, Module 3: Listening Skill, Module 4: Reading Skill, Module 5:
Grammar Nazi, and Module 6: When Albert Einstein writes like a
Shakespeare. This course is taught entirely online. There is no set time frame;
students can do the activities when it suits them best. This course takes
approximately 12-15 hours to complete. Significantly, this course helps
learners to earn credit exemptions through APEL C and speed their way to
graduation due to its flexibility and students can work through them at their
own pace.
