MIND Card is a card game that is played with specially printed mathematics
deck. The finding from TIMSS and PISA shows that one of the major
attributes contributes to high failure rate of mathematics assessment is the
weakness in arithmetic. Hence, the MIND Card is introduced to improve
students’ understanding in basic mathematical operations. The MIND Card
consists of the following cards: (i) numbers (0 to 9), (ii) operations (+, - , x,
÷), equal sign (=), and (iv) magic (replace any card (i)-(iii)). The game can
be played by a minimum of 2 players. Each player will be given a certain
number of cards (4 cards for beginner level). The players will take turn to
draw a new card. This card can be either replacing an existing card or
discarded. The winner is the player who is first able to match or arrange all
the cards into a correct mathematics statement (for example in beginner
level, 3 – 2 = 1). The main advantages of the MIND Card are: (i) promotes
higher order thinking (HOTS) through multiple solving strategies (for
example, 3 – 2 = ?, or ? – 2 = 3), and (ii) meets the learning ability of the
player group by adjusting the number of cards. The main impact of MIND
Card is supported by many studies where education games have evidences
of helping students to get significant improvement in learning. MIND Card
has great potential to be commercialized at low price especially to the
primary students.
