Project Title Bamboo Deodorizing Kraft Paper
Project Category Innovation
Abstract Bamboo Deodorize Kraft Paper made from bamboo fiber, paper pulp and bamboo charcoal has deodorized and moisture absorbency properties. This research and development project was mooted from two aspects. First, the bamboo fiber can function the same as wood fiber that can be made into paper in which was made by the Chinese for over 1500 years. It is from local resources which is renewable, biodegradable and compostable, thus provides an excellent alternative to paper and plastic currently the most common packing options. Secondly, charcoal has been well known to be used as non-toxic odor remover and humidifier. Compared to regular charcoal, bamboo charcoal has 10 times more surface area and is four times stronger in its absorption rate. Besides absorption, bamboo charcoal is also known to be antibacterial and antifungal. The process of making Bamboo kraft paper has been experimentally developed from bamboo fiber and bamboo charcoal using a technology of kraft paper process. Schizostachyum brachycladum commonly known as buluh lemang was used. It consisted of three processes. The first process was the bamboo pulp preparation. The second process was producing the bamboo charcoal which was then pounded into powder. The third process was the production of the kraft paper by combining the bamboo pulp and charcoal at a ratio of 70:30 with sago flour as a binder using a paper making mold.
