Abstract |
This Critical Reflection piece was the
product through listening to a song in
class. This method of teaching and
learning helped students to identify
and learn the different parts of
speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives,
adverbs, prepositions and conjunction)
in an entertaining manner. This method
was innovated because students often
do not reflect critically on their
experience which is essential to build
their self-esteem. In this method, a
worksheet of the lyrics of a song
entitled “That’s the Way It is†with
some blanks to be filled was
distributed to students. The song was
played twice and students filled in
the blanks with the different parts of
speech. Next, the lecturer discussed
the answers with the students. Those
who obtained the highest marks would
be the winners. This was followed by
the writing of a critical reflection
based on the message of the song.
After that, students orally shared
their critical reflection piece with
the whole class. This approach to
teaching is valuable as it has yet to
be incorporated into the curriculum in
schools and higher institutions of
learning to teach English Language
more effectively. This critical
reflection piece allows students to
reflect on and utilize their knowledge
to express their thoughts critically
in written form. It has great impact
for educators and parents as it helps
to produce self-confident young
critical thinkers. |
